Wait Times for Hearings

Appeals may proceed on the standard track or the fast track, depending on the nature of the file or as decided by a judge of the Court.

The wait time for a hearing proceeding on the standard track is the time elapsed between the moment when all the briefs have been filed (i.e., when the clerk sets the matter down for a hearing) and the date scheduled for the hearing of the appeal.

Although a large number of appeal files are opened each year, not all are heard on the merits. Appeal proceedings may be ended by an out-of-court settlement, by a settlement resulting from a settlement conference, or by the summary dismissal of the appeal.

Number of files in Settlement Conferences or Facilitation Conferences

The Quebec Court of Appeal offers judicial mediation (in civil matters) and facilitation services (in criminal matters), which provide the parties with an opportunity to reach a settlement with the assistance of a judge acting as mediator or facilitator.
