Court of Appeal of Quebec

Optical Character Recognition in Stenographic Transcripts

On April 27, 2023, the Clerk of Appeals in Quebec City, Mtre Pierre-Olivier Lacroix, and the Clerk of Appeals in Montreal, Mtre Bertrand Gervais, sent the letter set out below to the Association professionnelle des sténographes officiels du Québec in order to make its members aware of a problem relating to the addition of a space between letters in any given word, which has the effect of making keyword searches impossible.

In so doing, the clerks reiterated the fact that any document that does not comply with the directives of the Court of Appeal, including when stenographic transcripts do not easily allow for optical character recognition, will be refused.
