On October 17 and 18, 2024, the Quebec Court of Appeal’s 175th anniversary seminar was held in the historic Ernest-Cormier Building, the Court’s Montreal seat.
Attendees had the opportunity to hear seasoned speakers discuss various aspects of the Court’s evolution over time.
The Honourable Manon Savard, Chief Justice of Quebec, opened the seminar with a look at how the Court has lived up to the legislature’s aspirations for it at the time it was established. The first unit then focused on the Court’s past, examining the initial decades of its existence. The second unit examined the Court’s evolution in the fields of private law and public law. The third and final unit considered the role of women at the Court and then addressed past, present and future practices at the Court. The Honourable Jacques Chamberland, a former justice of the Court of Appeal, closed the seminar by sharing his thoughts about his years at the Court.
Lastly, in the middle of the first day, attendees had the opportunity to hear the seminar’s keynote speaker, columnist Chantal Hébert, discuss the role of the judiciary in federal and Quebec politics.
