The Honourable Sophie Lavallée

The Honourable Sophie Lavallée holds a bachelor’s degree (1995) and a master’s degree (1998) in law from Université Laval and a doctorate in law from Université de Montréal, which she earned under co-supervision at the Université de Nice-Sophia Antipolis (2002). Her legal studies won her numerous awards and scholarships, including, in 2002, the Minerve award for her Ph.D. thesis.

She was called to the Quebec Bar in 1996 and worked at the Superior Court of Quebec, in the judicial district of Quebec, as a lawyer (1996-1998). Thereafter, she was a professor at the Faculty of Law of Université Laval for close to 20 years.

Over the course of her career, Justice Lavallée developed expertise in the fields of environmental law and land use planning. She also taught the civil law of evidence for nearly 10 years and, in collaboration with Professor Jean-Claude Royer, published the 4th edition of La Preuve civile, which has been cited by courts at all levels throughout the country. With three of her colleagues, including Professor Jean-Maurice Arbour, she also co‑authored a publication on international environment law that won the Quebec Bar Foundation award in 2008.

Concurrently with her academic career, Justice Lavallée regularly acted as legal counsel in environmental law and land use planning matters, in particular, for associations, for Quebec’s Ministère de l’Environnement and Ministère de l’économie, as well as for the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OIF).

In 2019, she was the recipient of the Institut d’administration publique de Québec award for scientific contribution to Quebec’s public administration for her work in environmental law, which contributed to the advancement of Quebec public policies in this field.

Justice Lavallée has spoken at a number of conferences in Canada and abroad. She was, among other things, a visiting professor at Université Paris Sorbonne, Université catholique de Louvain, Université de Strasbourg and Université d’Aix-Marseille.

Justice Lavallée was appointed to the Court of Appeal of Quebec on September 30, 2020.
