The Honourable Judith Harvie

Justice Judith Harvie holds a Bachelor of Laws from the Université de Montréal. In 1996, she began her career as a law clerk to the Honourable Charles D. Gonthier at the Supreme Court of Canada. After being called to the Quebec Bar in 1997, she practised civil litigation at Ogilvy Renault (now Norton Rose Fulbright) until 1999. She then joined CBC/Radio-Canada’s legal department, where she stayed until 2019, practising in the areas of media law, constitutional law and civil liberties, administrative law, civil liability, intellectual property, construction law, access to information, and penal and criminal law. Throughout her career, she defended the corporation’s interests before courts at all levels. In 2015, she was promoted to Associate General Counsel and Executive Director, Media Law.

Throughout her career, Justice Harvie was involved with the Canadian Bar Association, serving notably as chair of its national and provincial Constitutional and Human Rights Law sections. She has lectured and taught on numerous topics, including image rights, defamation, the protection of journalistic sources, and publication bans.

Justice Harvie was appointed to the Superior Court of Quebec for the district of Montreal in June 2019 and, subsequently, to the Court of Appeal of Quebec on December 18, 2023.
